Theme Update: shapeSpace v1.7

shapeSpace is the starter WordPress theme that I use to build sites like Plugin-Planet.com and DigWP.com. I use it because it includes all of the most commonly used template tags and a minimal amount of clean markup. Additonally, shapeSpace includes a robust set of custom functions that make it easy to add and modify theme features and functionality. Continue reading »

Book Sale!

As mentioned, I’ve been super busy updating stuff, and have new versions available for Digging Into WordPress, .htaccess made easy, and The Tao of WordPress. To celebrate the updates, I’m having a “Fall Sale” on all books, with combo deals available for bundled books. Continue reading »

WordPress Plugin Updates!

It may not seem like it, but I’ve been super busy updating books, plugins, and websites with all sorts of new goodness. I just finished updating all of my free WordPress plugins that are hosted at the WordPress Plugin Directory. Here is a complete list: Continue reading »

New Design and Updated Content

I’m getting back into the swing of things around here, now stepping it up with a new design, new tools, and lots of updated (and new) content, demos, scripts, and more. Here is a quick rundown of the new design and updated projects.. Continue reading »

New Demos and Tools Pages

Working on organizing the site, I’ve put together two new pages that round-up my Demos and Tools. The demos are organized into sections, Ajax, CSS, PHP, and so on. Most of the tools are for encoding and decoding, but will eventually include stuff for CSS, .htaccess, JavaScript, et al. Both of these new pages are readily accessible from the top menu bar (see left screenshot). It’s better than fun! Continue reading »

New Design in Progress

My new book is doing well, so I have some time to work on my sites. Here at Perishable Press, I’ll be working on a redesign, refreshing some older content, and posting some new articles. Continue reading »

WP-Mix – A fresh mix of code snippets and tutorials

Wrapping up 2012, I finally launched xyCSS, which is all about responsive, grid-based design. To showcase xy.css, I used it to design WP-Mix.com, which also serves to house a growing collection of choice code snippets. Currently WP-Mix features over 100 snippets, tutorials, and other useful bits to help with WordPress development and web design in general. The topics are similar to those at Perishable Press (e.g., WordPress, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, etc.), but the posts are less-involved and aimed at intermediate […] Continue reading »

xy.css – Responsive Grid Design

For the past year or so, I’ve been heavy into responsive, grid-based design. In December, I “soft-launched” my new site, xyCSS with a simple tweet: Bringing it all together: https://perishablepress.com/xycss/ As implied (and explained), xy.css is a lightweight CSS template for creating semantic HTML5 designs on a responsive liquid matrix. What I did in 2012

It’s been an amazing year across the board. Here is a quick recap of some of the things I did in 2012. I don’t keep a journal of every little detail, but here are some of the things I remember specifically setting out to do, sort of organized by month. So much more to report, these are just the highlights. Continue reading »

New Book: .htaccess made easy

I’m proud to announce the launch of my new book on .htaccess, titled .htaccess made easy. It’s a book I’ve been wanting to write for years, since first getting hooked on .htaccess way back in 2006. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about .htaccess, Apache, security, and web-design in general — with many articles on the topic published here at Perishable Press and elsewhere on the Web. Everyone kept inspiring me to bring it all together and write a book […] Continue reading »

Media Temple (dv) 4.0 Migration & Optimization

About a month ago, I received an email letting me know that my host, Media Temple, is discontinuing their (dv) Dedicated Virtual 3.0-3.5 servers. Everyone hosted on the old servers must migrate to the new (dv) 4.0 servers. The friendly (mt) email says: The migration is a fairly simple process and you’ll have until early summer to complete it. Having now performed the migration, I can assure you that solid preparation is required to make it a smooth and “fairly […] Continue reading »

New Theme!

Yep, just when you thought I was moving on with my life, I spend another month on a new theme. My problem is that I tend to listen to criticism. And my previous theme received plenty of it. People just thought it was too much, too sloppy, too busy, too colorful, too ugly, too lame, and you get the idea. For the record, I think the Unicorner theme is fun and awesome, looking great and visually appealing on my iMac. […] Continue reading »

Perishable Press 2012 Redesign

Welcome to the new site! So many changes I don’t even know where to begin.. I think for now the design is beta so I’ll hold off on a big lengthy explanation and just keep an eye on things for awhile.. I guess this post is a good place to mention anything weird or broken that’s happened after the new design went live.. Definitely more updates on the way :) Continue reading »

What Happened to Delicious.com?

What happened to Delicious.com? I logged in today after a week or so and everything is gone. Well okay, not everything, but somehow many features have completely disappeared. After scouring as many options and settings as I could find, there seems to be some serious problems at the new Delicious.com. Continue reading »

Sort of Turning Off Comments

Over the course of the past year or so, the quality of comments on posts here at Perishable Press has really deteriorated, to the point that I actually considered doing something that I told myself I would never do: disable comments completely. Continue reading »

WP Themes In Depth: Deep dive into WP theme development.
Thoughts
Dashlane recently redesigned, stating proudly that they "removed all filigree". They should have kept it, as the app now looks generic and boring.
Working on integration for setaPDF + EDD on the new books subdomain. Good times.
Toggle visibility of hidden files on Mac: Cmd + Shift + .
Great tool for checking browser caching for web pages and all included files.
The new minimalist design styled by 14KB of CSS (uncompressed and un-minified). That covers 850+ posts and pages spanning 15 years of diverse content.
Amazing (and sad) to think that, in the year 2020, Internet Explorer still doesn't support the placeholder attribute, which is supported by all other major browsers.
Finishing up with the latest redesign for Perishable Press! Should be live this week or early next.
