More Website Notes

At last we are witnessing the completion of a WordPress theme that should endure at least the next year. If I find myself redesigning the Perishable Press website yet again sometime during 2006, then I should just walk away from it all. The Information skin has plenty of features to keep me busy and lots of nooks and crannies for some serious chillz. Read more »

Electric Sheep and the ASCII Matrix

Paying homage to Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, via collective screensaver morphology over at electricsheep.org. A virtual gallery of visually inspiring graphics generated via system of networked computers. Update: apparently the electricsheep.org site went down and then was sold to some other company, so link removed. ASCII Matrix Also check out this sweet ASCII rendition of the “bullet-dodging” scene from The Matrix. Old-school effects in the house :) Read more »

Getting into It

Several months since it began, the Perishable Press is finally being fleshed out with posts, feeds, and images. Now that the site is (95%) built, we are experiencing the joys of blogging, tweaking, and fine-tuning details. So if the site looks good but seems a little short on content, just give us time — there is much planned for the future. I am grateful for this website, and look forward to using it to its fullest potential. Read more »

Garbage Theme

This theme is actually a conglomeration of several thematic elements from my first few stabs at skinning an old b2evolution blog. As with the recently released Finished theme, the XHTML markup and corresponding CSS for this skin were downright scary. That may have been because of all the drugs I was taking at the time. But writing the garbage theme was so much fun, I just had to revisit it after sobering up a little. What I found was some real garbage, so I did the time and totally tied it off proper. Before the redesign, it was awful code […] Read more »

Finished Theme

The “Finished” skin is actually an old b2evolution blog skin that I really enjoyed creating. The original markup was hideous, and the CSS was just a mess. But that was then and this is now. Completely rewritten with structural markup and presentational CSS, “Finished” won’t feel so abandoned and alone anymore. Read more »

Entropy Theme

Entropic Delightz! — The disproportionate inverse of Monzilla’s recently released DOS_FX theme. As with the DOS_FX theme, Entropy is bandwidth-friendly, color-safe, structurally sound, and XHTML strict. Very minimalistic and casual… Read more »

DOS_FX Theme

It’s pure DOS, Baby! — Behold, locked in a laboratory clean-room for hours with only archaic operating systems at hand, I found myself amazed by the uncompromising utility of a Windows DOS console. After a few traceroutes I found myself barfing up the illest CSS on the earth — moments later, DOS_FX was born… Read more »

Bananaz Theme

Perishable Press serves ‘em Bananaz with this release of the Bananaz theme for WordPress. Highly customizable, this unique two-column hybrid design merges fixed-width content with a liquid header and footer. Also, the Bananaz theme employs structural HTML markup and the miracle of CSS to function consistently across browsers while validating as XHTML strict. Plus, Bananaz is configured to support several popular WordPress functions and plugins (see install notes for complete details). Read more »

Dead Letter Art

Dead Letter Art represents the creative exploits of several Northwest chillers. Their collective history is rich and reaches back almost two decades. For several years during the turn of the millennium, the DLa artists collaborated and published over twenty issues of their infamous zine, Dead Letter Art. Somehow, time has once again brought great distance between the members of DLa, and only time will tell if Dead Letter Art will truly rest in peace. Read more »

Creative Writing Exercise, Part 1

A Hemingway scene1 written in the style of Borges: I noticed the labyrinth of trees on my left, it appeared as a mysterious maze. I watched as the infinite trees erased the endless fields, and marveled at the ancient, unearthed bonsai tree. I imagined the raging storm that had ripped it from the ground, forcing it back into the bamboo grove. I thought about how its roots were now swirling with dirt, each tiny rock a microcosm of solar systems, as conceived by Hung Pham Lu, the great astronomer. I stared blankly as my mind wandered, transforming the multitude of […] Read more »

Creative Writing Exercise, Part 2

A Borges1 scene written in the style of Hemingway: Nick looked for his explanation. He reached into his pack and easily remembered. It felt good. Nick knew the answer. It is not complete. It is not untrue. The answer looked like a big picture of everything, just like Jenkins had said. Nick remembered Jenkins. It had been a long time since he had seen him. Jenkins was not like Bill and John. They said the answer was plain and ordinary. They said the answer was ordinary time. Nick didn’t believe them. He believed Jenkins. Jenkins believed in plenty of different […] Read more »
