It’s been awhile since my last personal news post, and I figure that enough has been happening to warrant yet another exciting news update. Yay! ;)
So let’s see, first on my mind is the recent launch of the new design for Monzilla Media, the official site for my personal website and graphic design business. The first two versions of the site were single-page brochure sites, but this new version is fully loaded, featuring tons of portfolio content, business news, and service information. If you’ve got a minute, I would love to hear your feedback!
[ Detail of 88teeth’s revamped “Manoid” ] Longtime friend and fellow-DLa member ThaneC recently has updated his personal/portfolio site, eightyeightteeth.com. ThaneC’s site has been completely redesigned and reorganized, featuring easy navigation and generous presentation of core content. Every page is overflowing with creative juice — thumbnail galleries of artistic works, digital photos, and custom wallpapers are a pleasure to browse. Full-size versions of each creative piece “pop-up” upon command. ThaneC’s unpretentious wit and artistic sincerity furnish each page with insightful commentary and inside information concerning each delicious offering. Designed according to the principles of modern web design, ThaneC’s site now employs the efficiency and flexibility of HTML and CSS, rounded out with a touch of unobtrusive JavaScript to make it all sweet.
Some friends and I recently gathered in Portland, Oregon for the 2007 PDX Zine Symposium. Held on the lush campus of Portland State University, this was the seventh annual zine convention, featuring an abundance of tablers, zinesters, and visitors. Although we did not purchase a display table this year, we did represent our graphic zine collective, Dead Letter Art (DLa) by making the rounds, checking out new zines, and sharing issues of DLa. Since the annual Zine Symposium began in 2000, DLa has attended almost every year, learning, networking, and exploring ideas with fellow zinesters. Thus, with a hefty stack of DLa issues in hand, the DLa posse traded zines, collected chunks, and consumed as much information as possible from an endless river of zine literature and DIY propaganda.
Pardon this post! I am posting this information online for personal references purposes. I may need to revisit this code at some point in the future, and if I post it here I will always know where to find it (trust me, it would disappear into the abyss if I tried storing it offline). So, although it is intended solely for myself, feel free to extract and use anything you like, as long as commented attribution remains. What we have here are two different methods for including a slideshow on a web page. The first method employs the techniques discussed in this article, while the second method skips the Flash and employs only the JavaScript portion of the slideshow. Here is some additional help with embedding Flash content, including slideshows, and JavaScript techniques.
Dead Letter Art (DLa) is an esoteric underground art collective. The collective consists of eight core members that have known each other since high school, and have been creating and sharing their art for well over fifteen years. Sharing many common interests and influences, the DLa collective explores diverse artistic media, both individually and collectively. Their vast media expertise includes everything from drawing and painting to website development and multimedia production. Further, the group also embraces the fine art of desktop publishing, employing their periodically printed zine, Dead Letter Art, with their recently redesigned website, deadletterart.com, as their vehicle of choice for sharing, discussing, and exploring their highly creative, collective universe.
A new Dead Letter Art website is in the works and coming soon. The new site enhances previous content with dynamic features and improved organization. The new site has also been updated to include more archived content, including ancient issues and special projects. Additionally, some keen Ajax functionality kicks the “fun” up a notch. Anticipated release date: September 1, 2006. Check out the old, sickly green website here (update 9/2011: green site has been removed).
Update: [ 02/01/07 ] — The new Dead Letter Art website is now in full effect! Check it out at deadletterart.com. Browse the infamous DLa Archives, chat live with the crew in the DLa Forum, or even leave a comment in the Guestbook. — You’ll be glad you did..
The Dead Letter Art website is temporarily back online. This is the once infamous, vomit-green version of the website we’re talking about here. One of the first serious attempts at website design, the green DLa site offers slice-based rollover action, table-based markup, and seriously grotesque aesthetics. However hideous the site, its content showcases some of the finest highlights from the Dead Letter Art experience.
Nonetheless, the site is back online for a hopefully brief three-week tour. This may indeed be your last chance to relive some of that ol’ vomit-green magic. So come on, feel the love…
Osseus Website Multimedia artist extraordinaire, Kenneth Paul Schrag — better known as Osseus to his fellow DLa comrades — is currently in the process of updating his personal design portfolio website (Flash required). Ken’s work is diverse, with online samples covering both graphic design and illustration.
We finally met up with Ken and Yasuko several months ago before their Japanese trip. We shared coffee in the Desert Oasis and shared recent experiences and creative happenings. Ken and Yasuko have been busy working as Graphic Designers in the Seattle area, and have big plans to start a potentially lucrative design-based service business. Beyond this, they have worked several interesting freelance jobs ranging from modeling & sculpture to illustration & design.
In related news, the possible release of DLa #20 — The Elusive Texture Issue — has resurfaced, with potential to catalyze the swift development and re-establishment of the Dead Letter Art empire. Website plans are in the works, and several DLa-related graphic-design projects have been discussed. Especially inspiring are ideas involving letter press and archaic printing methods. Stay tuned..
Dead Letter Art represents the creative exploits of several Northwest chillers. Their collective history is rich and reaches back almost two decades. For several years during the turn of the millennium, the DLa artists collaborated and published over twenty issues of their infamous zine, Dead Letter Art. Somehow, time has once again brought great distance between the members of DLa, and only time will tell if Dead Letter Art will truly rest in peace.
Nonetheless, it is interesting to ponder the current happenings related to those once involved with DLa. So, in the interest of future business, here are some current DLa statistics:
DLa Status: Unconscious
DLa Issue: Halloween Issue, 2005
DLa Website: Last update: November 6th, 2004
DLa Project: Website redesign (Spring 2006)

Regaining focus through faith in Christ. Also working on various projects, mostly online (for now).

Rumored to be slaving his life away as a maintenance technician. Most likely dabbling in the creative realm, snapping photos, drawing pictures, and painting rocks.

Yes it is that time again. that time to write right what it is that must be thought of looked at and expressed throatly so. so silent i sit here screaming my fingers through this iconoplastic monstrosity. and i see my hands and sad to say see they are withering slowly away yet surely yes they seem to be and i will let it go knowing that soon they will be mine no more. i can move them with full control now i smile and sit patiently for the thought to come in like the melodic envelope of that high high synth that echoes so magically above my head soars head sores as i type this ..flowing froing throwing it all away now i have to ask since i half two acts have you seen your own hands? go on now and look at them for a moment no stare at them until you see that they belong to you as they have gotten older are you scared does it frighten you. just look at those old things. you belong in a cage for wearing such ragged old claws. go on now and sniff that disintegrating flesh. plug it in plug it in. flesh for sixty days flesh in every day–a real fresh fetish and an i opener as well.
Welcome. Perishable business subsystems manifests fine werx summoned critically from subconscious realms. Selections intend to inspire creativity from within any medium. Students learn while starving, artists live with passion, businessmen do better business. Dialogue serves purposes suspected by readers, unnecessary to love dogs. Nevertheless, now present manipulative perceptions…fill every crevice. Feeling easy, feeding, and feeling like eating. Relax. Like like like like like like like. Indeed, plenty to chews from in this brief confinement. So breathe easy, see read and feel the impetuous inspiration machine werk that fantastic magic in each nose, bone, and hole.
this world
that rapes us
hates and kills us
we fight
and fight
and fight
but to no avail because the world
has us trapped.
never a thing of peace
only striving after vanity
and lofty wishful thinking.
everything about everything
will fuck with you
while demanding full compliance
with its every desire
saying, "be this way do that for me
only me think of me love me."
full conformity
yet not enough for this world.
Business trips, belated reality. Soon before forgotten business, there was pleasure. Good pleasures hated bad business, they fought always. Business before pleasure then business then pleasure. Soon there was no business nor pleasure to be found. The people panicked. Business was back but no pleasure. Shocked, the people locked their businesses, they ran for pleasure and hid from leisure on the day that business took over.
